Hand-Painted Silk Scarves

I started painting silk scarves as a way to create something that was both beautiful and wearable. I primarily use a few techniques: Serti, free-hand using anti-fusant, and watercolor.

Water color entails painting on wet silk and allowing the colors to bleed and combine, or, if the scarf is dry, the dyes overlap without blending. The Serti method uses a resist (a medium that prevents the flow of dye on the material) to essentially outline a design to which dye is applied. Free-hand painting uses an "anti-fusant" medium to hold the dye in place on the silk instead of bleeding while dye is applied.

I have used a variety of scarves of different sizes and currently only use 35"x35" Habotai and 15"x60" satin scarves since those are the largest I can fit in my studio. Here are a few examples of my hand-painted 100% silk scarves.

Later in life than I should have, I began to study areas of the visual arts. My training has been self-directed through independent study, online learning, and in-person classes and workshops in the arts community of the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

To get an overview of the field, I completed MoMA's Modern and Contemporary Art and Design online certificate and spent time learning to draw, paint, do photography and graphic design; then metalworking and jewelry-making as well as 3D design and printing technologies.

Currently, I am primarily painting on silk scarves with fiber reactive dyes although I used silk paints in my earlier works. Another endeavor has been crafting small items such as wallets and notebook covers from vegetable tanned leather.
